Tonnikalaleipiä ja telttailua

Kuinka matkustaa halvalla? Kokeile seuraavia:

  1. Liftaa kyyti
  2. Yövy couchsurffaajalla
  3. Halvat hostellit
  4. Eväät supermarketista ravintolan sijaan
  5. Telttaile (tarkista onko luvallista...)

Me kokeilimme näitä kaikkia ystäväni Essin kanssa interrail-matkallamme. Essi saapui Dornbirniin, jossa vietimme muutaman päivän, jonka jälkeen lähdimme matkaan. Kuljimme liftaamalla Vaduzin kautta Zürichiin. Kyyti järjetyi molemmilla kerroilla 15-20 min odottelun jälkeen. Kyydin saamista auttoi paperinen kyltti, johon raapustimme päämäärämme nimen.

Couchsurfing-palvelu on kätevä, sillä profiilista näkee suositusten perusteella, onko henkilö luotettava.

Turisti-infossakin tuloamme kaupunkiin ihmeteltiin. Tutustuimme hostellissamme Zagrebissa uusiin kavereihin.

How to travel cheaply? Try followings:
  1. Hitchhiking
  2. Couchsurfing
  3. Cheap hostels
  4. Food from supermarket instead of  eating in restaurants
  5. Camping (check out if it is legal...)

We tried all of these with my friend Essi on our Interrail trip. Essi came to Dornbirn and we spend some days here and then we left to the road. We hitchhiked thorugh Vaduz to Zurich. We got a ride both times after standing next to the road about 15-20 minutes. We had our destination written on a paper sign which helped us for getting the lift. We were in Zurich one day before what we had planned so we decided to set up a tent outside of the center. In Finland it is possible to set up a tent almost anywhere unless it's disturbing someone. We found out the next day that it's illegal in Switzerland and if we would get caught we should pay fines. Luckily we didn't get any problems. On Friday we met our couchsurfer host and we stayed at her place for one night. She showed around the city for us and another couchsurfer form Germany. We went to a concert and jumped from a bridge to a flowing river to float with the flow. That was one of the highlights of our trip!

Both of those have their risks. You shouldn't jump on just anyone's car and I wouldn't do it alone. The people who offered us a ride where really nice and helped us even though they were in a hurry themselves. Couchsurfing is useful when you can see from someone's profile if the person is reliable and has some references. The idea behind couchsurfing is to meet locals, stay in their house and look around the city together. You can choose a host by similar interests but often you need to send many messages to get one positive answer. You can also make a public trip and the couchsurfers in that city can connect you.

We continued our trip from Zurich to Slovenia by a night train and started our interrail tickets. In Slovenia we stayed one night in a hostel in Bled and went rowing with a boat in Lake Bled. That place was definitely worth seeing. We visited Ljubljana and took a train to Zagreb, Croatia. In Zagreb we also stayed in a hostel. We walked around the city and visited Museum of Broken Relationships where we could read touching stories. We made a day trip to Sisak which was a small city near Zagreb. It was so small that we were probably the only tourists there for a while. Even in the tourist information they were surprised we were there. We got new friends in our hostel in Zagreb and the funniest thing was when almost all the people from our hostel room was spending an evening together. I recommend talking with the people in your hostel room bravely. You might get new friends! Our hostels costed from 6 euros to 13 euros per night per person. So pretty cheap!

From Croatia we travelled by train to Belgrade, Serbia, where we ate our last pieces of tuna fish sandwiches and orea chocolate. We knew that at least Switzerland is an expensive country so we had brought a lot food with us from Austria. Tuna fish sandwiches still lasted until this day and chocolate had not melted too much. Croatia and Serbia were more cheap countries so sometimes we also went eating out in restaurants. We changed some money from euros to kuna and dinar because some places it's not possible to pay by card in these countries.

In the center of Belgrade you can see beautiful architecture but also houses which look like collapsing. Those buildings are destroyed in war and the country doesn't have enough money to repair all of them. Also many police officers seem to be around every corner and they stand even in supermarkets. We got a paper from our hostel so that we can show it to police if they stop us. We survived without them stopping us and saw many beautiful street art. Essi continued her trip to Macedonia when I traveled back to Dornbirn through Hungary with a night train. 20 hours in a train went by mostly sleeping. Coming to Austria felt like coming back home. Now it's time to enjoy Dornbirn and holiday for some weeks before returning back to Finland.
